Description
This is the strongest retinol in The Ordinary range and it should be treated with respect. One percent is a high concentration, and it is best approached after you have already tolerated a lower strength for a few months.
Retinol increases cell turnover, stimulates collagen, clears congestion and fades pigmentation. Here it is suspended in squalane, a lightweight non-comedogenic oil, which slows delivery slightly and makes it more comfortable than a water-based formula of the same strength.
Use it at night only, on completely dry skin, starting once a week. A few drops is the entire face. Build up over two to three months, never nightly from the start. Dryness and flaking in the first weeks is normal; burning, redness that lasts, or peeling sheets of skin means you have gone too fast, so stop for a week and restart lower.
Sunscreen every morning is mandatory with this. Retinol makes skin markedly more sun-sensitive, and under Kenyan sun that produces new dark patches rather than a tan. Using retinol without daily SPF actively works against you.
Do not combine with acids on the same night, and do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
