Mela B3 is the most advanced dark spot treatment La Roche-Posay has released, and it is the serum we point people to when nothing else has worked on their pigmentation.
It is built around Melasyl, a molecule the brand spent well over a decade developing. Rather than only suppressing pigment production, it captures pigment precursors before they mature, which is a different mechanism from arbutin, vitamin C or niacinamide. It is paired here with 10 percent niacinamide to work on existing marks and reduce redness at the same time.
It was tested across a wide range of skin tones, including deep ones, which matters. A great deal of pigmentation research has historically been done on lighter skin, and the marks that concern most Kenyan customers, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and melasma on melanin-rich skin, behave differently and are more persistent.
Apply morning and evening on clean skin before moisturiser. It layers safely with retinol and acids, though introduce them separately.
This is a serious commitment rather than a quick fix. Expect eight weeks for first visible change and up to six months for stubborn melasma, and use sunscreen every single morning, because a single unprotected week will undo months of progress.
