Description
Alpha arbutin is a brightening ingredient that works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme that produces melanin. It targets excess pigment where it forms, and unlike acids or retinol it does not exfoliate, sensitise or require a slow build-up.
That gentleness is what makes it valuable. Hydroquinone is stronger but comes with real risks and should only be used under medical supervision, and the unregulated skin lightening creams sold widely in Kenya are frequently dangerous, often containing mercury or steroids that permanently damage the skin. Alpha arbutin is the safe, evidence-supported alternative for anyone wanting to even out tone.
It works well on post-acne marks, sun-induced dark patches and melasma. Hyaluronic acid in the formula adds hydration alongside.
Apply a few drops morning and evening to clean skin before moisturiser. It layers safely with niacinamide, vitamin C and most other serums, and it can be used indefinitely.
This is a slow ingredient. Expect ten to twelve weeks for visible change, and pair it with daily sunscreen, without which fading is close to impossible under equatorial sun.
