This is the product that made Anua famous, and the popularity is deserved. It is 77 percent houttuynia cordata, known as heartleaf, an extract used for centuries to calm inflamed skin.
It is a watery toner with no fragrance, no alcohol and no exfoliating acids, and it exists to do one thing: settle the skin down. Redness, heat, stinging, the tight angry feeling after too much sun or too aggressive a routine. It also helps with the inflammation around active breakouts, which is why acne-prone skin responds to it so well.
In Kenya it is particularly useful after sun exposure. A long day outdoors, a weekend at the coast, or an afternoon in Nairobi midday sun leaves skin hot and reactive, and this brings it back faster than a moisturiser alone.
Apply it with your hands rather than a cotton pad, patting it in over damp skin after cleansing and before serum. You can layer it two or three times for more hydration. Kept in the fridge it is even better on irritated skin.
It pairs well with retinol and acids, taking the edge off the irritation those cause without cancelling their effect.
